Dr Maria Martin

Dr Maria Martin

MBChB, MRCGP

Lead Clinician - GPwER Dermatology

Dr Martin gained GPwER accreditation from BAD/RCGP in 2020, prior to that she qualified with the Diploma in Practical Dermatology from Cardiff University in 2005, and has been accredited as a GP with Specialist Interest in Dermatology since 2010.

Dr Martin worked as a GPwSI for 4 years in the hospital dermatology service in Kendal and started South Lakes Dermatology Service in October 2012. She has a particular interest in dermoscopy, common skin problems and genital skin disorders.

Dr Martin is a member of the South Cumbria skin cancer MDT and the Primary Care Dermatology Society.

Dr Jen Smith

GPwER Dermatology

Dr Smith completed her Medical Degree in Glasgow graduating in 1991 and completed her GP training in Lanarkshire. Dr Smith worked as a locum in the North West before becoming a GP Partner in Preston for 9 years. 

Dr Smith has been working in Dermatology since 1999, initially as a clinical assistant and then as a GP with Specialist Interest since 2002 and decided to fully embrace this role in 2009, leaving her practice.

Dr Smith completed the Cardiff Diploma in 1995 and was one of very few to gain a Diploma in it. Dr Smith joined our service in 2017 and is delighted to work with our team. 

Dr Rebecca Bate

MBChB, BSc, MRCGP, PGDip (Derm)

GPwER Dermatology

In 2020 Dr Bate completed a fellowship in dermatology alongside studying for the Diploma in Practical Dermatology from the University of Cardiff which she completed in 2021.

In 2020 Dr Bate moved to the local area with her family where she worked as a salaried GP until present. Dr Bate joined the South Lakes Dermatology Service team in 2023 where she is working alongside Dr Martin to gain her GPWER qualifications.

Dr John Lear

Professor John Lear

Consultant Dermatologist 

Professor Lear is a Consultant Dermatoloigist whose main specialist interest is the diagnosis and management of skin cancer and pigmented and pre-cancerous lesions. He has a particular interest in the non-surgical management of these conditions, including topical photodynamic therapy (PDT), although he sees patients with any skin condition. 

Having qualified in medicine in 1991 at Leicester University, Professor Lear underwent general medical training in Leicester, following which he undertook his dermatological training in the Midlands and the South West as a senior registrar.

Dr Simon Jones

Dr Simon Jones

MBBS (hons), MRCGP, DTMH, DipOccMed

GP with Specialist Interest in Skin Surgery

Dr Jones is a GP at The James Cochrane Practice, he qualified from Newcastle University in 2000 before doing his GP training in the North East of England. 

He has worked in South Sudan with MSF, Guatemala, New Zealand, and on expeditions around the world and has a particular interest in Skin surgery. He has most recently been working with the Maxillofacial team at Westmorland General Hospital.

Dave Clarke

Nurse Practitioner Dave Clarke

Advanced Nurse Practitioner with Specialist Interest in Skin Surgery

Dave has been an Advanced Nurse Practitioner at The James Cochrane Practice for 21 years, and over that period has developed specialist skills in Skin Surgery. 

He has performed skin surgery for our service since its formation in 2012.
